EMPLOYMENT HISTORY

November 2001 to present

IT Lecturer, Coleg Llysfasi an agricultural and FE college in Clwyd, North Wales. I teach adults on courses leading to the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) and the OCR Computer Literacy And IT (CLAIT) certificate.

The ECDL gives students a basic grounding in: general computer knowledge, file managing, word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation software and using the Internet, World Wide Web and e-mail. This post is full-time.

November 1999 to present

I am also a tutor with the Open University, tutoring the course T171 You, Your Computer and the Net. This course aims to introduce students to computers and the Internet, to enable them to become competent in the use of ICT, to give them direct experience of using computer conferencing and e-mail for study and collaboration with other learners and to prepare them for higher level study in the Open University or elsewhere. This post is part-time.

November 1993 to October 2001

Information Technology tutor and assessor for Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor, Gwynedd. I was mostly based in the college's training centre in Blaenau Ffestiniog where I taught unemployed adults who wanted to update their skills to help them find work. For most of this period I was teaching and assessing people working towards NVQ Using IT Level 1 and 2. Most of the trainees had no previous experience with computers so I gained plenty of experience in teaching complete beginners, building their confidence and enabling them to reach a high standard in a short time. I also taught evening classes leading to the RSA CLAIT or RSA IBT II certificate, and short courses at Coleg Harlech, one of which was an introduction to the Internet and how to write homepages for the World Wide Web.

Because the college technician was based in Dolgellau, I had to be able to keep the computers in the centre running without much assistance.

June 1993 - September 1993

Temporary summer work with Welsh Gold Ltd in Dolgellau. I was assistant to the manager during the summer in which the construction work was completed and the Welsh Gold centre was first opened to the public.

April 1984 - May 1993

In 1984 I set up, together with my husband, a small educational computer software business (Science Education Software Ltd). The company published programs which were sold by direct mail to schools and colleges all over the United Kingdom. During the nine years I was Managing Director of the company, I was responsible for testing the software written in-house, writing the teacher's notes which accompanied the programs and providing customer support by phone or letter. Writing the advertising material, sales and forward planning for the company were also my responsibility.

November 1974 - March 1984

Employed by the Youth Hostel Association (working with my husband as joint Wardens) first in Norwich, then in Crickhowell in South Wales and finally (from June 1978) at Kings Youth Hostel near Dolgellau.

On leaving full-time education - Summer 1974

Civil Service, first with the DHSS in Manchester, dealing with sickness and maternity benefit, then after promotion to Executive Officer, I moved to London to work for the Department of Education and Science.
